The cryogenic air separation process is one of the most popular air separation processes, used frequently in medium to large scale plants. It is the most preferred technology for producing Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon in liquid/gaseous form. Cryogenic technology is known to be the most cost-effective technology for higher production requirements. In today’s market scenario, all liquefied industrial gas production plants make use of cryogenic technology to produce their liquid products.
First Step: The first step in any Cryogenic Air Separation plant is filtering and compressing air. After filtration, the Compressed Air is cooled to reach approximately ambient temperature by passing through heat exchangers.
Second Step: The second step is the removal of Carbon dioxide & Water vapor, by passing the gas through Molecular Sieve based dryer, after which it enters the Distillation Column of the plant.
Third Step: The third step is the cooling of the input air feed to cryogenic temperatures., with the help of the extremely cold product and waste gas. Air is cooled in heat exchangers, by cold product & waste gas streams coming out of the air separation columns. The very cold temperatures required for distillation of cryogenic products are achieved by a refrigeration process that expands the high-pressure input air stream with the help of an Expansion Valve & Expansion Engine / Expansion Turbine.
Fourth Step: This step involves the use of a high pressure and a low-pressure Distillation Column, to separate the air into desired products. While oxygen leaves from the bottom of the low-pressure distillation column, nitrogen leaves from the top. Impure oxygen produced in the high-pressure distillation column is further purified in the low-pressure column. Products in Liquid or Gaseous form is withdrawn from the column of the plant.
